Feature Request: Cantonese Jyutping and Korean Pronunciation Annotations
Hello Language Reactor team,
I would like to suggest adding better support for Cantonese language learning, especially for learners who are not yet comfortable reading Traditional Chinese characters.
Suggested feature
For Cantonese subtitles, it would be very helpful to have optional pronunciation annotations such as:
Traditional Chinese → Jyutping → Korean pronunciation
For example:
夏日狂閃
haa6 jat6 → 하앗 얏
kong4 sim2 → 콩 심
Ideally, users could turn these annotations on or off, just like other subtitle-learning features.
Why this would be useful
Cantonese learners face a particular difficulty because Cantonese subtitles are normally written using Traditional Chinese characters, while the pronunciation is very different from Mandarin.
For learners who already know some Mandarin, this can be especially confusing. We may recognize the characters and their Mandarin pronunciation, but still have difficulty knowing how to pronounce them in Cantonese.
Jyutping would solve much of this problem.
A Korean pronunciation guide would also be very helpful for Korean learners who are just beginning Cantonese. It could work as an optional learning aid alongside Jyutping rather than replacing it.
Example of the ideal learning experience
When watching a Cantonese video, a learner could choose:
Chinese characters only
夏日狂閃
or
Characters + Jyutping
夏日狂閃
haa6 jat6 kong4 sim2
or
Characters + Jyutping + Korean pronunciation
夏日狂閃
haa6 jat6 kong4 sim2
하앗 얏 콩 심
This would make Language Reactor much more useful for Cantonese learners, particularly those using YouTube or Netflix videos for listening and shadowing practice.
I understand that adding another language and pronunciation system may require significant development work. Even Jyutping support alone would already be extremely valuable.
Thank you for considering this feature request, and thank you for continuing to improve Language Reactor for language learners around the world.
