Japanese learners: would visual mnemonic cards inside Language Reactor help?

Hi everyone,

I am looking for feedback from Japanese learners who use Language Reactor. I often understand a subtitle word after checking the dictionary, but forget it soon afterward, so I built a small custom-dictionary integration that turns the word into a visual mnemonic card.

With it, you can click a Japanese subtitle word and open its Bento Card directly inside Language Reactor. An existing card loads immediately. If the word is new, you can add it to a deck with its reading, meaning, visual mnemonic, common usage warning, and example sentence, then review it later in Bento Cards.

If you would like to try it:

  1. Open Settings → Custom dictionary URLs in Language Reactor.
  2. Add this URL:

  1. Click a Japanese subtitle word and choose Bento Cards in the dictionary panel.

It is free during open beta. Bento Cards is an independent integration and is not affiliated with Language Reactor.

I would especially appreciate feedback on three things:

  • Does the visual card help the word stick better than a normal definition?
  • Does the embedded card fit comfortably in your Language Reactor layout?
  • What would make the setup or lookup flow easier?

I just gave it a shot, and it’s very, very impressive. I love that the art on the cards is consistent in style, and it matches the word even if it’s an abstract term.

As for your questions, I can’t speak for the first one because I’ve yet to use it long-term. However, the card fits well in LR’s new window thing. I can’t think of what would make the setup flow easier, but it did take me a while to understand it’s the U1 dictionary in the dictionary panel (as I hadn’t installed any custom dictionaries before this).

The only idea I have on my side is that it’d be great if the card and/or quizzing integrated the audio and screenshot sample from LR. I don’t know how feasible that is, of course, but it’d be great to remember the context you first encountered the word in.

All said and done, I’m super excited with this and am going to be using it more!
