Download error: Invalid manifest

Hi!
I’ve had your extension for years and really loved using it. I recently deleted it just so I could show my students how to install and set it up, but now I can’t get it back :disappointed:

When I try to install it again from the Chrome Web Store, I get this message:
“Download error: Invalid manifest”

I asked ChatGPT about it, and it said the extension might have been removed because of the transition from Manifest V2 to V3, and that extensions not updated yet are being taken down by Chrome.

Could you please fix this or let us know what’s going on? I know the extension had a few small issues, but I still think it’s super useful — and I’d really like to keep using it (and show it to my students!).

Thanks a lot!

Hi Daniella!

This error doesn’t necessarily mean there’s a problem with the Language Reactor extension itself. Here are a few steps to try:

  1. Make sure your browser is up to date.
An outdated version of Chrome (or another Chromium browser) can sometimes cause issues with modern extensions like Language Reactor, which uses Manifest V3.
  2. Temporarily disable other extensions.
Sometimes there can be conflicts between extensions that interfere with installation.
  3. (Advanced) Clear out old or leftover extension data.
If you’ve previously installed Language Reactor, some residual files might be lingering and causing problems.
You can manually clear them by going to this folder on your computer:
C:\Users\<YourName>\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Extensions
  • Replace <YourName> with your Windows account username.
  • This path assumes you’re using Google Chrome. If you’re using another Chromium-based browser (like Brave or Edge), check their documentation for the correct data folder.Once you’re there, look for and delete the folder named:
hoombieeljmmljlkjmnheibnpciblicm

That’s the ID for Language Reactor. Deleting that folder will remove any leftover data from a previous install, allowing you to start fresh.

Let me know if you hit any snags—I’m happy to help troubleshoot further!
