I did some research on the words “insure” and “ensure”, and now I understand the difference. Ensure means to make sure something happens. For example, I drink water to ensure I stay healthy. Insure means to buy protection, like for a car or a house. For example, I insure my car so the insurance company can help if there is an accident. These words sound similar, but they are used in different ways. Now I feel more confident using them!
Excellent examples, James! You now understand the difference between ensure and insure more clearly than many (perhaps most) native speakers of English.
Perhaps you’d like to add into the mix “assure,” which is different in meaning from both ensure and insure.
