Pinyin support for Chinese (Mandarin) subtitles?

Thanks for this! I’ve literally been looking for something like this for years!

A couple of questions:

  • Some subtitles flash on the screen for way too little time to read. Is there any way to keep them on the screen until the next subtitle needs to be displayed?
  • Is there a way to group pinyin syllables together by word?

I think not at the moment, but that code is about to get some sunshine.

There’s an ‘autopause’ feature (hit ‘q’). You can also hover on the sub with your mouse to pause at the end of the sub. Also I have another idea to address this issue with keys, coming soon.

At the moment, we put a space between pinyin syllables. Is this bad? We can take it out.

I can put romanization for Cantonese on todo the list, might take me a little while to get round to it.

We currently have primary subs and either/both machine translations and a netflix translation. I’ll keep this request in mind, but can’t promise just now. Do you have a specific use case in mind?

Hi David,

Thanks for the reply. I think Jyutping and Yale Romanization for Cantonese would be a good start. In terms of the application I guess it would depend on the limits of the program? Would it be possible to have all three? By the three I mean the cantonese romanization (choice of Jyutping or Yale) + english subs + choice of either traditional OR simplified characters all on the screen at once?

Keep up the amazing work!!!

Yes, I’m using autopause right now to help me. Thanks for that feature.

Regarding spaces, please do not take out the spaces between the syllables  Would make it very hard to read.

Is Taiwanese something that could be added in the future? Or would that be harder due to all the dialect variation?

I would love to be able to show pinyin above my english subtitles.
So in this order from bottom to top: English -> Pinyin -> Characters.

Since it’s better for me in the beginning to know the pinyin first and then learn the characters. This way it’s quicker for me to identify the pinyin.

Any plans on Cantonese guys? Have been more than 2 years…
